Carpal Tunnel syndrome is a very commonly seen ailment of the arm and hand. It is a characterized by tingling, numbness,“pins and needles” in the hand and wrist often extending into the first 3 fingers. It can also cause varying degrees of pain, ranging from a mild dull ache to sharp and excruciating. Symptoms are often more extreme at night and stiffness may be felt in the morning. In very severe cases muscle weakness and atrophy may occur.
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs as a result of: movements causing repetitive stress that lead to compression of the median nerve, swelling to the median nerve and fluid retention during pregnancy. Degenerations in the cervical spine may also indirectly affect the median nerve.
Acupuncture is a successful form of treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In Chinese medicine the pain and numbness is often caused by stagnation of blood and qi (the vital energy of the body) in the meridians. Local and distal points will be used to promote the movement of blood and qi throughout the channels and accelerate healing. Acupuncture has a natural anti-inflammatory effect which will aid in reducing the swelling surrounding the median nerve and alleviate the compression on the nerve. Acupuncture is also very effective in treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome due to fluid retention in pregnancy by improving the vital flow of energy and balancing the organs.
